"Declinist panic. Hysterical nostalgia. America may not be over, but it is certainly in thrall to the idea."
Author Frank Rich provides a brief content analysis of past and present obsessions with decline in American culture, which I was surprised to learn have occurred frequently in our history.
I repost this because the article made me realize that, not only have I been guilty of hastily spreading declinist ideas, I should probably spend more time determining why the U.S. might be in trouble before assigning blame. To say “America is going downhill” just because I disapprove of a society-wide phenomenon or event is lazy, so I welcome the self-correction.
It took me a couple of days to finish this article, but I would recommend it to anyone who suspects that America’s best days are behind it. Ultimately, as Rich seems to imply, that’s really not for us to say.
